Kayak student reading

Odyssey is thrilled to be the first school in Maryland to offer a program for 5 and 6 year olds who appear to be dyslexic.  We call this our Kayak class and it is a full day program.

Our purpose:

  • to strengthen our students’ phonological awareness skills
  • to expand their expressive language
  • to instill a love for reading and books in a literature rich environment

We directly teach beginning reading skills through the “PhonoGraphix Program”, a research driven method that builds the segmenting, blending and manipulating of sounds into every lesson.  Handwriting is taught with the “Handwriting Without Tears” curriculum which is being used by the entire Lower School.  All Kayak students also work with a Speech Pathologist regularly. Our student / teacher ratio in the classroom is 3:1 which allows us to meet individual needs and offer specialized instruction. The Kayak students participate in most aspects of the regular Odyssey program.  They attend our school assemblies, eat lunch in the Galley and have recess everyday with the other Lower school students. They also attend  Music, Art, Library and Athletics classes.
