Dr. Ben Carson |
Dr. Ben Carson, world famous pediatric neurosurgeon from Johns Hopkins, spoke to Odyssey School students and faculty on May 17 about the importance of reading and education, about his life experiences and about the necessity to “THINK BIG. “
Brought to the School by Odyssey trustee Roger Bennett, Dr. Carson was introduced by a grateful Odyssey family on whose son he had performed surgery 12 years earlier. Beyond the professional relationship with several in the audience, Dr. Carson’s message connected with Odyssey’s Four Pillars of Kindness, Honesty, Respect and Hard Work.
Students were fascinated to hear of Dr. Carson’s early struggles with reading and the persistence it took to become a stellar student and highly-skilled surgeon as well as a top-notch human being. Using THINK BIG as an acrostic, he spoke about Talent, Honesty, Insight, Nice, and Knowledge, followed by Books, Indepth knowledge and God.
Odyssey’s students related to Dr. Carson’s message that hard work produces the confidence with which they are much more likely to achieve goals.
