Fall-ing in Love with Reading at Odyssey

Every fall, we celebrate autumn with a Lower School program called, Fall Into Reading.  This program is designed to make reading fun, exciting, and to encourage our students to fall in love with the magic of books. Fall Into Reading is a collaborative endeavor, led by a team of teachers, including our librarian, Mrs. Dorothy Hampton, our Lower School art teacher, Mrs. Kesling St. Denis, and our Lower School science teacher, Ms. Sophie Gerard.

Each year, Fall Into Reading is based on a unique theme. This year’s theme was, “Plantemonium!”, inspired by the book, Plantzilla, by Maryland author Jerdine Nolan.

Students read books about plants (or had their parents read to them), learned new plant vocabulary words, and studied about the science of fire. Also, students created carved pumpkins based on the book they read and added to the display of over 80 other carved jack-o-lanterns down Odyssey’s main hallway.

During art classes, students created a beautiful, illuminated, life-sized Plantzilla sculpture which was exhibited at the Garden Glow celebration at Ladew Gardens.

No one can resist liking Plantzilla, “the best, friendliest plant in the whole world”, and our Lower School students loved participating in Fall Into Reading at Odyssey.
