A New Chapter Begins: A Message from Dr. Tim Lightman
July 9, 2025
Dear Odyssey Community,
I am truly delighted to introduce myself as the new Head of School at The Odyssey School. As I write this, my family and I are navigating our own personal journey of change—packing up our house, saying goodbyes, and contemplating the start of a new chapter in our lives. We know firsthand how change generates anticipation, excitement, and hope for what lies ahead. In addition, it can also evoke anxiety and bittersweet feelings as we leave behind the comfort and familiarity of home and community. Having a fifteen-year-old daughter who is about to leave the only community and school she has ever truly known, continually reminds me how these emotions are not contradictory—rather they complement and enrich one another.

Transitions are a natural and healthy part of life, especially for children. At Odyssey, we know that each of our students bravely faces unique challenges and opportunities. Whether it’s joining the Odyssey community for the first time (like me), mastering new skills, meeting new teachers, or making new friends, change is woven into the fabric of their educational journey. As both a parent and educator, I have seen how resilience, combined with support and understanding, helps children—and adults—navigate these moments with confidence, courage, and grace.
At The Odyssey School, embracing change means building on the strong foundation of our close-knit community and the Four Pillars that guide us: Kindness, Honesty, Respect, and Hard Work. These values are at the heart of everything we do, from our daily interactions to our long-term vision. Change here is not about leaving behind what makes us special—it’s about honoring our mission and traditions as we thoughtfully move forward together.
Our strengths set us apart: specialized instruction tailored to each individual student, an evidence-based program designed for children with dyslexia and other language learning differences, a deep commitment to character education, and a focus on self-advocacy. By recognizing and nurturing each student’s unique strengths and passions, we ensure that Odyssey remains a school where every child is supported, valued, and inspired to grow both academically and personally.
I am honored to step into this role, joining a dedicated community of educators, families (past and present), and friends, who have shaped Odyssey into the remarkable school it is today. I am especially excited to work alongside our talented faculty and staff to continue fostering a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
Thank you for welcoming my family and me to the Odyssey community. I invite you to reach out and share your Odyssey story with me over the summer or in the fall. Together, I am confident we will continue to make Odyssey a place where every child is known, valued, and their unique journey celebrated.
With warm regards,
Dr. Tim Lightman, Head of School
