Odyssey Names Bella Curran as First Head of Early Learning

We are delighted to announce that Ms. Bella Curran has been named Odyssey’s first Head of Early Learning. In this role, Bella will support our Kayak, Sunfish, Ketch, and Laser students and families, expand our teacher mentorship program, and oversee Early Learning curriculum design.

The creation of an Early Learning division allows Odyssey to further individualize and strengthen our support for children and families from their Kayak year through their Sloop year. By dedicating focused leadership to our youngest learners, we are building on our longstanding commitment to early education and strengthening the strong foundation that helps every child grow, learn, and thrive throughout their journey at Odyssey.

"I have always found joy in working with children, especially our youngest. The students in our Early Learning program are just beginning their academic journey and my goal is to help set them up for a trajectory of success." - Bella Curran, Head of Early Learning

A passionate advocate for early intervention and an Odyssey faculty member for 10+ years, Bella brings deep knowledge and commitment to this new role. Bella previously served as Odyssey's Assistant Lower School Head and as a reading and writing tutor. She has also served on our admissions committee, directed our summer camp, coordinated our We All Learn partnership with Stevenson University, and led our annual Phono-Graphix training.

Five Questions With...Odyssey’s First Head of Early Learning

Why is early identification and intervention so critical for children with dyslexia?
Early intervention is powerful—it can truly change the academic path for a child with dyslexia. Even by ages 4 or 4½, we can spot signs of a language learning difference. Research shows that children who receive support in kindergarten or first grade make far greater gains than those who start later. The earlier we act, the smoother and more successful a child’s journey can be. At Odyssey, we want students to build the skills they need and grow confident in themselves as learners and individuals.

What is your vision for our Early Learning program?
My vision includes rebuilding and strengthening our Kayak (kindergarten-level) program and partnering with area preschools, making sure families and teachers know the early signs to look for and how to help. I plan to be present in our classrooms every day, working alongside our amazing teachers, cheering on each child’s growth, and ensuring families feel supported every step of the way.

What are you most excited about as you begin this new chapter?
I’m especially excited to focus my attention on our youngest learners in the Sunfish, Ketch, and Laser classes. I can’t wait to build relationships with every child and family, and to work closely with teachers to design inspiring curriculum. I’m also excited to be part of the everyday magic at Odyssey—whether reading aloud during Dockside, attending student performances, observing science discoveries, or listening to thoughtful book reviews in Language class. My goal is to be a consistent, encouraging presence in the life of our school.

What inspires your work with children?
I’ve wanted to be an educator for as long as I can remember—I loved school as a child and have always been a big reader. When my brother was in second grade, he was diagnosed with dyslexia and he transferred to Odyssey for third. The move to Odyssey changed everything for him. Watching his journey opened my eyes and inspired me to pursue this work. My brother's experience is what first brought me to Odyssey, and it’s what continues to drive my passion for supporting students with learning differences each day.

What's your favorite Odyssey tradition?
It’s impossible to pick just one! If I had to choose, my favorite is Fall into Reading. Hearing every child’s “Book Talk” and seeing their creative pumpkin decorations always fills me with pride. A very close second is Polar Express Day, a cozy Early Learning tradition with pajamas, hot cocoa, and crafts. Both events truly capture the joy, community, and magic of learning together.
